Best Buddies Israel
Best Buddies Israel was launched in 2006 and currently operates chapters in Tel Aviv, Ber Sheva, Hertzliya, Ashdod and Bat Yam. Both volunteers in the High School and the College program meet frequently; the College matches meeting weekly and the High School matches see each other twice a week. Usually on Tuesdays, the participants work on a project with their friends and every Shabbat, the pairs go to prayer services together and spend some time together afterwards. Monthly, the buddy pairs participate in a group activity. This past March, during Best Buddies Month, one of the Ben Gurion University chapter’s activities was a mall outing. For some of their participants, it was their first trip to the mall ever! Moshe said, “I can not believe how many stores and restaurants are in the mall!”
Best Buddies Israel participant, Hagar shares about the friendship she has with her buddy, Sarit, what they like to do together and how they celebrated Best Buddies Month.
When I first joined Best Buddies Israel, I was really nervous and did not know how I would feel about the experience. Once I was matched with my buddy, Sarit, I realized that she was just like me. We both laugh at the same jokes, like the same boys, and like the same movies. One of my favorite activities that we love to do together is cooking. Sarit and I also love to make desserts together and we have even had the opportunity to visit pizza shops and make our own pizzas.
During Best Buddies Month, we made Hamantashen which is a Jewish cookie traditionally made for Purim (a Jewish holiday) along with other sweets like chocolate cake, popcorn balls, and peanut butter bars. After making all of those yummy desserts we put together twenty baskets of treats and dropped them off at the local hospital to make the patients feel happy.
Next year, I will be joining the Army, so I won’t get to see Sarit as much as I would like to or be a part of Best Buddies, but I do plan to keep in touch with my friend, Sarit when I have free time!
