Media, Media, Media! All For Best Buddies

Our communications team has been working hard to ensure that the Best Buddies mission is being seen and heard — from stories in newspapers and magazines, to features on news stations around the country.

We’ve generated publicity from various events hosted this year, including the Palm Beach Gala, the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port, and the 22nd Annual Best Buddies International Leadership Conference at Indiana University. The team has also produced public service announcements (PSAs) with Miami Heat superstar, Chris Bosh and the NBA draft’s number one pick, Kyrie Irving, who was chosen to play for the Cleveland Caveliers.

Getting out of the office for events is always a blast for us; it’s when we really get to see our Best Buddies mission in action, like at our Leadership Conference this past July. There, I taught a media workshop alongside Larry Levin, who educated the class on photography.

The goal of the media portion of the workshop was to help students (from across the nation and around the world) recognize the ability they have to get local media to attend their Best Buddies events. Students also learned how to write a press release, how to pitch a story, and the do’s and don’ts of working with media.

They were taught the importance of building a comprehensive media list and establishing good relationships with different reporters in their communities.

Here’s a look at some of the media coverage Best Buddies International has obtained over the past year:

  • In February and March, hundreds of stories were written about the partnership between Montblanc and Best Buddies and the Third Annual Palm Beach Gala, with articles featured in publications including the Boston Common, Los Angeles Confidential, Haute Living, the Sun-Sentinel’s Society Scene and the Palm Beach Daily News.
  • Best Buddies CEO and founder, Anthony K. Shriver and his family were featured in a 16-page spread in the March issue of Italian Vogue. The spread, titled “The Family that Plays Together… The Shrivers/An All-American Family” by Bruce Webber, includes various photos of the family in their Miami home.
  • Vanity Fair’s May issue (both print and online) featured an article spotlighting the Shriver siblings—Bobby, Anthony, Mark, Maria, and Tim Shriver—for their tremendous involvement and dedication to the community over the years.
  • The Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign was brought to light through the PSA “Not Acceptable,” which was aired during episodes of “Glee,” on the USA Network during “Law&Order: SVU,” on TBS during “The Office,” on F/X during “Kung Fu Panda,” on truTV during “Hard Core Pawn,” and on both the CBS and Oxygen networks. Stories on the PSA were also featured online at the Washington Post, Huffington Post and on MSNBC’s the Last Word Blog.
  • Numerous stories relating to the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port event resulted in more than 60 million impressions.  Articles appeared in print and online outlets such as The Boston Globe, Boston Herlad, US Weekly, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, People, and USA Today. Boston TV stations including CBS, FOX, NESN, NBC, the CW and ABC covered the event, along with radio stations WBMX-FM, WEEI-AM and WZLX-FM. Coverage of the Challenge was also featured on WHDH’s “Deco Drive,” with host Louis Aguirre.
  • The 22nd Annual Best Buddies International Leadership Conference: The Big Picture generated numerous print and online stories, with feature articles placed in publications including Disability News, Herald Times, Indiana Daily Student, and Delaware’s Cape Gazette.

The media team is looking forward to the Best Buddies Challenges in California and Washington D.C. in the coming months, as well as the Miami Gala, which will cap off our events season for 2011. Be sure to keep an eye out for coverage on all of these events and more!
