Hineni, One Job at a Time

By: Judith Anderson and Andrea Schonenberg

The Ruderman Family Foundation and Best Buddies Jobs are proud to announce another year of continued support to raise awareness and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities within the Jewish community in Miami-Dade and Broward County. To welcome all is a Jewish tradition.

In her recent article from The Jewish Week “Jobs: For Adults with Disabilities, a Neverending Sequester,” Deborah Fisher, Psy.D. says it best:

“Jewish values recognize that a person’s dignity is enhanced when one is able to support oneself through one’s own work. Indeed, Psalm 128 says, “You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.” Continued purposeful existence depends on humanity working together.”

The Ruderman Family Foundation is focused on breaking the social stigma of disability in the Jewish community by embracing individuals with disabilities as equal members of society through inclusion in the workplace.  With the help of supported employment agencies such as Best Buddies, the goal is to facilitate inclusion in the workplace to grow and empower the untapped population of enthusiastic and talented workers.

Since the inception of the Best Buddies Jobs Program, over 500 individuals with disabilities have achieved their personal employment goals by joining the rest of the community in a work environment, earning income at a prevailing wage, paying taxes, and developing a sense of self-worth. In partnership with over 100 employers nationwide, Best Buddies is able to portray the participant’s abilities rather than disabilities.

Hineni means, “Here I am” in Hebrew. This community effort seeks to raise awareness and promote inclusion so those with a disability can say, “Hineni, one job at a time.”
