MIAMI, November 7, 2013  – Best Buddies International, a groundbreaking nonprofit founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is pleased to announce that Carlos Slim Helú will be honored during the  17th Annual Zenith Watches Best Buddies Miami Gala at The Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Friday, November 22.

Slim Helú, President of the Carlos Slim Foundation will be honored with the “Global Spirit of Leadership” award at this year’s Gala. This award is Best Buddies’ highest accolade and is presented to individuals who have shown great leadership, generosity and spirit in supporting the organization’s mission on a global scale. Over the past decade, he has supported the Best Buddies mission through multi-million dollar donations designed to help the organization expand its friendship programs in Mexico and establish pilot programs throughout Latin America.

“Carlos Slim Helú has been a great friend to Best Buddies for many years and we are eternally grateful for the incredible generosity he’s bestowed upon our organization” says Shriver, Founder and Chairman of Best Buddies International. “Carlos’ long-standing commitment to supporting our mission of friendship and inclusion has allowed us to increase our outreach to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Mexico, Latin America and the rest of the world at unprecedented levels, personifying the true spirit of what Best Buddies is all about.”

This year’s event will have a festive Art Deco theme and will feature a fabulous cocktail hour, gourmet dinner, exclusive live and silent auctions, and a performance by special musical guest Sean Paul.

Each year, the Gala brings together Miami’s most notable residents and celebrities from around the globe. Among those expected to attend this year are: Gala Co-Chairs Andy Abboud, Romero Britto, Linda Coll, Bill Fauerbach, Marc Leder, May Liang & Jim Lintott, Alina Shriver and Don Soffer; actress Vivica A. Fox; U.S Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis; Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo; Miss USA 2013 Erin Brady; and Miss Teen USA 2013 Cassidy Wolf.

As always, there will also be a number of one-of-a-kind items up for auction, including a walk-on role in one of film producer Ryan Cavanaugh’s new movies, FIFI’s 2014 World Cup Experience package which includes two tickets to the semi-finals game, hotel stay and access to the VIP Coca-Cola Lounges at the game, and tickets to the 2014 Sony Open tennis tournament in Key Biscayne, Florida.
